Over $664 Million Approved for NY Hurricane Sandy Victims


On November 25, 2012, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced more than $664 million for individuals and families affected by Hurricane Sandy in New York.  FEMA is helping 13 designated counties, but the most attention is going toward the most damaged parts of the State.  The following areas are receiving the most assistance:


•    Kings County $139.1 million
•    Nassau County $224.6 million
•    New York County $8.2 million
•    Queens County $170.4 million
•    Richmond County $70.4 million
•    Suffolk County $47.4 million


The 13 counties receiving assistance from FEMA include: Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester.  


The following is a summary of FEMA disaster recovery and other recovery in New York up to November 25, 2012:


•    Over 230,000 citizens of New York contacted FEMA for information or assistance, and 117,000 applied for assistance online
•    917 FEMA inspectors have conducted over 131,000 home inspections
•    a total of 1,088 Community Relations specialists are going from home to home and informing citizens about available assistance
•    the New York City Office of Emergency Management has set up and operated 8 feeding sites
•    a Prescription Medication Task Force, a Rapid Deployment Force, a National Veterinary Response Team, and two Disaster Medical Assistance Teams remain in New York
•    the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved over $29 million of disaster loans to businesses and individuals
•    the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has provided about 1.1 million pounds of food from November 4 to November 30, 2012
