What Are Ballots

Ballots are items which are used for individuals to vote for a candidate in an election. Ballots are used for elections at every level, including local, state and federal elections. There are many types of ballots, but the original ballot was  small ball used to place a vote.
In some elections, individuals may write down their vote on a slip of paper. However, most elections now have a more sophisticated ballot system. In any cases, a ballot is used for one individual, with each individual getting their own ballot to place their vote. This is partly done to ensure privacy, but also to be sure that no person is able to alter another persons vote. The ballot is then placed in a box.
There are other types of ballots which are also pieces of paper, but the paper already has the candidates names listed. These are simple ballots on which individuals simply circle the name of the candidate they wish to vote for, or put a check mark next to the name. In most cases, there will also be a blank space for write in candidates.
In many elections, voter privacy is important. First, privacy prevents others from trying to alter or change a persons vote. In addition, individuals should be able to vote freely without being harassed or having others mock them for their choice.
