General Overview On Republican Senators

As of 2010, the Democratic Party controlled the United States Senate, while the Republican Party was the Minority Party within the Senate. Throughout history, control of the Senate has bounced back and forth between the Republican Party and Democratic Party, and though the Democratic Party is currently the Majority Party, this can easily change after a Senate election, which occurs every two years. There are fewer Republican US Senators within the Senate than there are Democratic Senators, making the Republican Party the Minority Party.
Nevertheless, the Republican Senators fight to ensure that the interests of the Republican Party are represented within the Senate. These Senators are responsible for upholding the values of the Republican Party, though they face a number of challenges achieving this as the current Minority Party.
There are currently 41 Republican Senators serving on the United States Senate. These Senators have been elected to represent many different states. For example, the state of Alabama has elected two Republican Senators: Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions. Georgia selected Republican Saxby Chambliss and Republican Johnny Isakson to represent the state. The states of Kansas and Kentucky have also elected Republican Senators.
Other states that have selected Republicans to serve of the Senate include Maine, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina. The current Senate Minority leader is Republican Mitch McConnell, from the state of Kentucky. Jon Kyl, the Republican Senator from Arizona has acquired the position of Senate Minority Whip. Republican Senators from Texas, South Dakota, and Wyoming also hold important office positions.

Senate Democrats
The Senate Democrats are responsible for upholding the values of the Democratic Party and representing the interests of their Party while voting on issues and legislation specified on the Senators Schedule. The Democratic Party is currently the majority party within the United States Senate, though this can change during a Senate election.

Republican Senators
The Democratic US Senators currently outnumber the Republican Senators, giving the Democratic Party control over the Senate. Nevertheless, the Republican Senators work hard to ensure that the interests and concerns of the Republican Party are represented in the Senate. Republican Senators have controlled the Senate for many periods throughout history. 


North Carolina Senators
The North Carolina Senators were elected by the residents of the state of North Carolina. North Carolina is one of the few states that have elected both a Democratic and a Republican Senator. Michigan Senators

Michigan Senators work to protect and improve the state of Michigan. Currently, Senator Carl Levin and Senator Debbie Stabenow are representing Michigan in the United States Senate. Both Senator Levin and Senator Stabenow are Democratic Senators, and maintain similar positions on a variety of issues, including environmental conservation and health care. 

Patrick Leahy
In terms of seniority, Patrick Leahy maintains the second highest rank in the United States Senate. Senator Leahy has represented the state of Vermont in the U.S. Senate for an extensive period of time and is an extremely influential figure within a number of different Senate Committees and subcommittees. 

Jim Webb
Jim Webb is the Democratic Senator that represents the state of Virginia. Senator Jim Webb has experience serving in the United States military and on Presidential Cabinets. He serves on a number of different Senate Committees and acts as chairman of a variety of Subcommittees. Senator Webb is also an accomplished author. 


Harry Reid
Harry Reid has been elected to represent the state of Nevada in the United States Senate repeatedly. Senator Harry Reid has extensive experience maintaining important positions within the Senate. Currently the Majority Leader in the Senate, Senator Reid has also served in a number of other notable positions, including as the Democratic Whip. 

George Voinovich
George Voinovich was selected to represent the state of Ohio in the U.S. Senate on multiple occasions. He played a primary role in combating the foreclosure pandemic and addressing the credit crisis that damaged the economy of the United States. Senator Voinovich has had a long career serving Ohio, both in the Senate and in other government offices, and plans to retire in 2011. 

Robert Byrd
Robert Byrd represented West Virginia in the United States Senate. He was repeatedly reelected to serve as a state Senator for this state. Senator Robert Byrd died in 2010, ending his extensive period of service in the Senate. Senator Byrd is recognized as the longest serving member of Congress in the history of the United States, and one of the most influential figures to serve on the Senate. 

Chuck Grassley
Chuck Grassley was elected to represent that state of Iowa in the U.S. Senate. Senator Grassley serves on a number of different Senate Committees and has acted as the chairman of the Finance Committee. He has been an important advocate of renewable energy and has taken the steps necessary to create alternative energy sources, including wind energy.  


Orrin Hatch

Orrin Hatch was elected to serve as the Utah state Senator and represent Utah in the United Sates Senate. Senator Hatch is a respected figure who is involved in a variety of Senate Committees and Subcommittees. He is well known for working closely with Democratic Senators to make necessary changes and pass legislation. 


Mary Landrieu

Mary Landrieu was elected to represent the state of Louisiana in the United States Senate. Senator Mary Landrieu is a Democratic Senator, however, she is known to be very conservative. She is a member of many Committees and Subcommittees, and acts as the chairwoman of a number of these committees. 

John McCain
John McCain was elected to be the Arizona representative in the U.S. Senate. He gained national popularity during the 2008 presidential elections, when he ran against Barack Obama, the Democratic Candidate. Senator John McCain is also widely known for his history in the military. Despite the disappointing loss in the 2008 presidential election, Senator McCain continues to be an important figure in the Senate.

Harry Reid is the Democratic Senator who was elected to represent the state of Nevada in the United States Senate. Senator Harry Reid has served in the Senate since 1986, when he was first elected. Since his initial election, Senator Reid has been repeatedly reelected by the residents of Nevada. In addition to being a senior member of Congress, Senator Reid has been named the Senate Majority Leader, a position that he has held since 2007.
Prior to being elected to serve as the Majority Leader, Senator Reid acted as the Minority Leader. He has held major positions within the Senate for a significant duration of time. As the Majority Leader, Senator Reid is responsible for overseeing the Democratic Senators, to ensure that they promote the interests of the Democratic Party and vote in ways that will uphold the interests and values of the Party. 
Before Senator Harry Reid was elected to serve on the U.S. Senate, he served on the U.S. House of Representatives. He also acted as Nevada’s Lieutenant Governor and Henderson City’s city attorney. In addition, Senator Reid served on the Nevada Assembly. Prior to his role as the Democratic Leader in the Senate, he served as the Democratic Whip.
He is an extremely influential figure in the United States Senate, and he is respected by both Republican Senators and Democratic Senators. He works to improve the state of Nevada and the country as a whole. George Voinovich was elected by residents of Ohio to represent the state in the Senate. Senator Voinovich is a Republican Senator. He has gained a significant amount of experience serving the state of Ohio, as, prior to being elected as the state Senator, Voinovich acted as the Governor of Ohio and the mayor of Cleveland.
Senator Voinovich has experience addressing economic concerns, and therefore, one of his primary areas of interest in the state of the economy and effective ways to improve the economy. For example, in 2007, Senator Voinovich created the Mortgage Relief Act. This legislation was the first attempt at addressing the mortgage crisis and foreclosure epidemic that was plaguing the country. In addition, he produced the Intellectual Property Enforcement Act, which was instated in 2008. 
Senator Voinovich was one of the first individuals to take action against the declining economy. He often presents aggressive methods of addressing serious complications. In addition to addressing the credit crisis, Senator Voinovich is also concerned with expanding the job market and creating new jobs for unemployed individuals. He also promotes energy independence, affordable health care programs, and improved education systems for children.
He works to decrease government spending and diminish the national deficit. Senator Voinovich seeks to improve national defense and amplify the nation’s security. The Ohio Senator was reelected by the residents of Ohio following his initial term. Once his current term expires, the Senator plans to retire form the Senate.

Robert Byrd was repeatedly elected to represent the state of West Virginia in the United States Senate. Senator Robert Byrd was a Democratic Senator, who began serving on the Senate in 1959. Prior to being elected to serve in the U.S. Senate, Senator Byrd served on the U.S. House of Representatives. However, once he was elected to act as a state Senator, he flourished and became an increasingly powerful and influential figure within the Senate.
Senator Byrd died in 2010, after serving on the Senate for 51 years. He served the longest period of any Senator, or any member of Congress, in the history of the United States. During his time as a United States Senator, Senator Byrd possessed many important office positions.
He acted as the Senate Majority Whip, the Senate Majority Leader, the Senate Minority Leader, and he acted as the Senate’s President pro tempore. In addition, Senator Byrd was appointed to be the chairman of the Committee on Appropriations. In this position, he had extensive influence over the funds spent by the federal government. 
Overtime, Senator Robert Byrd changed his opinion on certain issues. For example, he originally opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and he filibustered the bill. However, he later supported the civil rights movements and associated legislation. While Senator Byrd approved American participation in the Vietnam War, he criticized and opposed the invasion of Iraq. Though Senator Byrd was a member of the Democratic Party, he maintained many conservative views and ideals, including the opposition of gay marriage and pro-choice movements.

Patrick Leahy is a Democratic Senator who was elected to represent the state of Vermont. He has served in the United States Senate for over 35 years and continues to be the only Democrat to ever be elected by Vermont. Senator Leahy was also the youngest individual ever to be elected by Virginia to serve in the Senate.
Prior to being elected to the Senate, Senator Leahy served as Chittenden County State’s Attorney, and was widely recognized for his involvement in the criminal justice system and associated activities. Patrick Leahy is an extremely influential Senator who has a great deal of experience addressing a number of the issues that the United States is currently facing. As a result, Senator Leahy serves on multiple Senate Committees and acts as the chairman of numerous subcommittees.
Senator Leahy serves on the Appropriations Committee and the Agriculture Committee. In addition, he was named the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. He is also a member of a variety of subcommittees, including the Homeland Security, Commerce, Interior, Defense, and Urban Development subcommittees. Senator Leahy was appointed to be the chairman of the Foreign Operations subcommittee.
He played a primary war in the creation of the USA PATRIOT ACT and initiated the steps taken to diminish the threat of terrorism and increase national security. Jim Webb is a Democratic Senator that was chosen by the residents of Virginia to serve in the United States Senate. Prior to being elected to the U.S. Senate, Senator Jim Webb was a very successful Vietnam veteran, who served as an infantry officer in the Marine Corps. Following the completion of his military service, Senator Webb worked as the Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Reagan administration.
Subsequently, he served as the Secretary of the Navy. His experience in the military and working for the Reagan administration helped to provide him with the experience necessary to represent Virginia in the Senate. In addition, Senator Webb is a well known author and has completed many books. He was elected to the Senate in 2006 and currently serves on a number of Senate Committees. 
Senator Jim Webb currently serves on the Foreign Relations Committee within the United States Senate. He was appointed to be the East Asia and Pacific Affairs Subcommittee chairman. As a result, Senator Webb oversees all issues, concerns, and legislation that are brought before the East Asia and Pacific Affairs subcommittee. He is also on the Senate Committee on Armed Forces and was named the chairman of the Personnel Subcommittee.
In addition, Senator Webb serves on the Joint Economic Committee and the Veterans’ Affairs Committee. He encourages economic fairness for every citizen of the United States. In many instances, a state will elect two Senators from the same political party. However, North Carolina is one of the states that have elected both a Republican Senator and a Democratic Senator, so that both Republic and Democratic North Carolina residents are represented. Richard Burr was elected by the residents of North Carolina to serve in the Senate.
Senator Burr is a Republican, who began his term in the Senate in January, 2005. Previously, he represented the state in the House of Representatives. He is a dedicated advocate of Veteran’s rights and works to better the health care provided to United States Veterans. Senator Burr also seeks to improve the economy on a state and national level, and promotes job growth in his state and throughout the country. 
Kay Hagan is the Democratic Senator that was elected by the state of North Carolina. Both NC Senators are concerned with the current state of the economy. Like many states, the state of Michigan has elected two Senators representing the same political party. Both Michigan Senators who are currently serving on the United States Senate are Democratic Senators. These Michigan Senators work to represent the state of Michigan and ensure that issues affecting Michigan are effectively resolved.
Currently, the two Democratic Michigan Senators are Senator Carl Levin and Senator Debbie Stabenow. Both of these Senators have extensive experience serving the state of Michigan. Prior to his election to the United States Senate, Senator Levin served on the Detroit City Council and worked to improve conditions within the City of Detroit.

She supports measures taken to address global warming and climate change. Senator Stabenow is concerned with creating jobs, establishing affordable health care, and investing in renewable energy.

Orrin Hatch was selected to represent the state of Utah in the United States Senate. He was initially elected to serve as Utah’s state Senator in 1977. Prior to being elected to serve in the state Senate, Senator Hatch was an attorney.
He is a Republican Senator and currently serves on a number of different Senate Committees. He is a member of the Finance Committee, the Aging Committee, the Intelligence Committee, and the Taxation Committee. He also served as chairman on the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and the Judiciary Committee.
Senator Hatch is a member of the Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Board of Directors. In addition, he was considered for a position in the Supreme Court while Ronald Reagan was the president of the United States. He is a well respected and influential individual within the Senate. 
Senator Hatch is widely recognized for his tendency to disregard party lines. If he agrees with legislation, he will cross any party boundaries to ensure that the legislation is passed. Senator Hatch works closely with Democratic Senators, particularly Edward Kennedy, the Senator of Massachusetts.
He is concerned with an array of issues, including environmental conservation and affordable health care. In general, Senator Hatch is a conservative Senator, voting against abortion and same sex marriage. He also opposed legislation that would prohibit employers from discriminating against an individual based on his/her sexual orientation. However, Senator Hatch supports stem cell research and the DREAM Act, which would provide qualifying illegal immigrants with a higher education.
